Few runners will be more warmed up, or rather, exhausted, at the starting line of the Pittsburgh Marathon than Wayne Kurtz.

At 6:30 a.m. race morning, Kurtz, a 45-year-old Pittsburgh native, will jump off a treadmill after running for 48 hours and be among the 6,300 marathoners ready to hit the hills when the gun goes off at 7 a.m.

Kurtz is no stranger to multi-day endurance events. As an ultra-triathlete, he has completed more than 400 races, including two finishes at the DECA Ironman competition, an event that involves completing an Ironman-distance triathlon (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) on 10 consecutive days. This September, Kurtz will do the triple—an Ironman a day for 30 days.
